FDA raises concerns about potentially harmful dietary supplements

Loading ....

The FDA is warning about harmful dietary supplements. The agency is alerting consumers about false claims, unknown ingredients, and potentially harmful products. Americans spent more than $40 billion on supplements last year, and three out of four Americans regularly take a supplement. Dr. David Agus joins “CBS This Morning” with more on the supplement regulation.

  1. I don’t trust what the FDA, CDC or WHO says about anything. I do my own research and that is good enough for me. Its True that pharmaceutical companies pay under the table to have control of their multi billion dollar industry. Think about the millions of GMO’s and drugs in our foods today to deal with our population growth. Why is that not regulated better. Or the millions of side effects from pharmaceutical drugs. But Nothing is wrong right! Its all BS! Please, don’t get me started on this topic…..T

Think about the millions of Indians that have survived on this planet for thousands of years before the big giants like FDA, CDC, and WHO came along! Lets get real. Supplements make all the difference in your life if you research what you need in a balance way! If supplements are made and consumed in a responsible way from manufacturers they are life changing for the general public. Think about the millions of antioxidants affecting your body today. Bottom line is that most people have horrible diets, especially us Fat Americans… Read the article below. I had just sent this to my email so I took the time to type this and shoot this info out which is pertinent to the conversation going on here!

” Readers are advised about reading media articles that say supplements
have no effects on the body’s immune system as most of the time these
are often written by ignorant journalist with no medical qualifications
or by greedy and unethical doctors that are under the payroll of the big
pharmaceutical giants. Readers should also avoid such publications and
online portals dissemination misinformation and fake news.”

  2. Fda approved vaccines with rat brains, human remains, animal remains. And meds that later were pulled after (killing) concerns. Pharma side effects have gotten so long they added three pages to your meds receipt. But yet vitamins/ supplements are more harmful? Follow the money trail.

  3. No, Big Pharma causes dementia. Ask Dr. Agus.

  4. FDA raises concerns that dietary supplements are potentially harmful to Big Pharma’s profit margin.

  5. Hit job

  6. This is ridiculous.

  7. FDA isn’t concerned about ingredients or benefits, because if they were, they wouldn’t approve meds that cause fatal side effects such as cancer. The real concern is that a lot of people have made the decision to educate themselves about alternative healing modalities. They are not consuming the side effect ridden drugs that the FDA has approved, and Big Pharma is losing literally billions of dollars, almost 40 to be exact.

  8. This is where liberals and conservatives can unite – supplements work! If supplements work so effectively, surely proof can be obtained easily. So where is it?

As for doctors who take supplements, there are also doctors who smoke who take supplements. There are obese doctors and those dying of cancer. The average life expectancy of doctors at 30 is not much different than that of the generic white collar professional. Our most advanced knowledge of medicine is more about probability than certainty. As a field of science, it’s not filled with absolutes. The science behind the usefulness of supplements is more sketchy.

  9. This guy is crazy, he must be taking supplements!

  10. Nice balanced story having folks from both sides…not. wow. The FDA is the last place I would get any information about supplements from.

  11. I know three medical doctors taking Vitamin K2.

  12. I find it laughable how you can could regulations on vitamins but not regulate the prescription drugs that supposed to already be FDA approved but causes cancer side effects in Dells with lawsuits. Stop the madness, another fear tactic so you won’t use supplements instead of flu shots artcetera

  13. Ok so its 2019..Why haven’t they been studied?

    1. Maybe because the impact of YouTube and the internet in general hasn’t hurt Big Pharma’s pocket book enough until now.

  14. Yes this is true. Also, please let us not forget about the illegal ingredients in our prescription medications coming from China and who knows where else.

    1. What illegal ingredients?

  15. This doc is very personable, however, he is immersed in our mainstream medical model which obviously is not helping us because of all the chronic diseases we have here in the US. Google his biography: he specializes in treating advanced cancer. “His clinical responsibilities include the development of clinical trials for new drugs and treatments for cancer, supported by the National Cancer Institute and other private foundations (he has no financial ties to drug companies).” He will never question anything outside of his box. Here are some resources I suggest: Functional Medicine and their doctors. Safe supplement sources: Dr. Wolfson, Dr. Hyman. Dr. Mercola. These supplements have been researched. These will lead to others. I take Dr. Wolfson supplements and trying to get off 2 prescription drugs after a virus attack to my heart (off 3 of them already, and doing great). CBS has this guy and another woman who is “spokesperson” for the AHA. They have had Dr Hyman on and Dr. Perlmutter on, but these guys like Agus are regulars! Just educate yourselves as many of us are doing, Big Pharma, FDA, AHA etc scared to lose their billions in keeping us sic!

  16. Cracks me up when people say we can’t get all we need from food. Our bodies were designed to take supplements!?! Lack of knowledge about nutrition and our highly processed food supply has lead to poor eating. Also the lack of regulation of the manufacturing process of supplements has always scared me

    1. I was shocked reading through the comments. Renee, yours is one of the few sane voices. If supplements work so effectively, surely proof can be obtained easily. As for doctors who take supplements, there are also doctors who smoke who take supplements.

    2. @Terri Kukla Sometimes we have to make choices and prioritize. Supplements aren’t cheap either. Neither is eating out. Red meat and alcohol are expensive too.

    3. No. Not every can afford and not everyone can eat all the recommended daily vegetables and fruits and dairy.

  17. The fda wants that extra 40 billion a year

  18. You are crazy. You cannot get all of your required vitamins, minerals and amino acids from diet alone.

    1. @Boyd Gilbreath But cavemen’s lifespan was 30-35 years.

    2. If you don’t eat processed food, of course you can get all the needed nutrients from your diet. If you couldn’t we wouldn’t be here. Cavemen didn’t have any supplements. This report though is subversive propaganda. And yes, they want you to ge to a doctor they are paying off and get much more expensive stuff.

    3. Yep

  19. This literally makes me so upset. Big pharma is a real thing and the reason that supplements do not have more studies is because research costs money and studying herbs and supplements has no financial benefits. We should because like the doc on the video said there are side effects people should know about.

  20. No, I’m not throwing away my supplements after listening to this segment. I am a cancer survivor and I attribute my good health to clean eating and whole food supplements. Yes, vet your supplements and know what you are taking and for what. But no to stop taking them altogether. I don’t need data to show me what supplements have done for me.

    1. @Kade Jordyn Agreed

    2. wellnative1 preach! Me too! Taking specific supplements helped me when nothing else available according medicine did.

  21. How do we know that supplements dont work if there have not been any studies done?💁🏻 *propaganda*

    1. The studies would probably be done by the pharmaceutical companies who would make sure they were proven to not help. Now I know some are not helpful and bad, but I would say most of them are helpful. It would be good to know that what they say is in them is actually in them.

    2. La Kabrona wxactly

  22. This is false! I had a long standing condition that I had to consult a medical student dealing with the same thing to help me out. her name is **redacted**on Twitter. She showed me published research and recommended docs that would work with me. I’m trying to encourage her to continue to help people like me but she is discouraged because of this kind of pushback from other medical people. She was also taking supplements to help her deal with her issues. Both of us had been to many doctors over many years! She referred me to the doc I needed an endocrinologist and also recommend a few supplements to help. I saw the medical community attack her when she spoke about starting to officially consult patients like me without anywhere else to turn. Please find doctors open to working with you! I am 100 fine thanks to her and my new doc! You can try messaging that student I mentioned how she helped me. *removed her twitter handle

  23. Are you serious? Do you think people are so stupid to believe the FDA which is owned by Big Pharma? The mainstream media isalso owned by the corporate giants such as W Rockefeller Foundation, Big Pharma!
The same people who advertise happy drug commercials on tv are attempting to discredit homeopathic ways of obtaining good health. Watch THE are for every drug imaginable with happy people leading full lives. Quietly in the background the drug companies have to list all the side effects which even include death! No one does from an overdose of Vitamin C or D or B12!!!!
    Supplements,are safe and work!

    1. Max: Many supplements are made from food like Turmeric, Ginger Root etc and are readily available at a reasonable cost at Walmart and other stores or online whether you are a “normal human” or not. Supplements made from food can be taken in a capsule form which makes it easy to regulate the amount of that food and the timing. When stored properly supplements can last much longer than regular foods making them that much more cost effective. That benefits the world as there is far too much food wasted or simply thrown away.

    2. Supplements are 99,9% not needed if you are a normal human with access to proper amounts of food.
Superfood and supplements are mostly marketing cows with insane markups. If something can sell with a hipster story or proper fear mongering for 50 to 1000 times the production price, that a cash cow.

I do not mock people that buy them, I just silently laugh. Maybe the placebo effect helps more than the actual thing they payed for 😉

But I do get angry if people promote supplements by fear mongering or some that actually hurt people

Hint: a 25kg sack of pure vitamin c is about 24€ here (used as anti oxidant in many products), “normal peoples price, not industrial amounts)
That would be 50.000 doses of 500mg.
Same goes for hip premixed things like Stevia. A 1kg 100% steviol crystal powder goes for 15€ (equals about 300kg worth of sugar). Premixed with fillers to use 1:1 it’s around 3€/kg = you make around 900-15 = 885€ profit

    3. The CBS report touted the safety of pharmaceuticals and implied that supplements are all dangerous. It’s the FDA party line.

    4. They aint safe happy drugs anymore. Their toxic peptides now.

    5. @Anne Frazer excess Vit D can be a problem. what’s that have to do with GMO and fluoride? Of course those are issues as well, saying one thing is true doesn’t mean the other two aren’t. *redacted* I was lab tested to have a b12 level too high because I also took another combo supplement with b12 in it.

  24. 1:36 More C-“BS” Might as well stop eating too. Most supplements are better and safer than stuff in the frozen/processed food isle. The FDA barely checks bottled water. You are your best doctor. Fake News!

  25. Does too much potassium hurt the kidneys?

In Vivo Evidence for Therapeutic Properties of Cannabidiol (CBD) for Alzheimer’s Disease. Watt G1, Karl T2

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease that is affecting an increasing number of people. It is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β and tau hyperphosphorylation as well as neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. Current AD treatments do not stop or reverse the disease progression, highlighting the need for new, more effective therapeutics. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive phytocannabinoid that has demonstrated neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in vitro. Thus, it is investigated as a potential multifunctional treatment option for AD. Here, we summarize the current status quo of in vivo effects of CBD in established pharmacological and transgenic animal models for AD.

The studies demonstrate the ability of CBD to reduce reactive gliosis and the neuroinflammatory response as well as to promote neurogenesis. Importantly, CBD also reverses and prevents the development of cognitive deficits in AD rodent models. Interestingly, combination therapies of CBD and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main active ingredient of cannabis sativa, show that CBD can antagonize the psychoactive effects associated with THC and possibly mediate greater therapeutic benefits than either phytocannabinoid alone. The studies provide “proof of principle” that CBD and possibly CBD-THC combinations are valid candidates for novel AD therapies. Further investigations should address the long-term potential of CBD and evaluate mechanisms involved in the therapeutic effects described.
