  1. I bought the product from 99 cent store. I will be using this solution today. thank you

    1. Excellent! Hope you like it! It’s very inexpensive and super effective!

  2. Hi I was wondering if you actually need the orange oxygen cleaner? I have oxi clean powder so i dont know if that works as a substitute

    1. Yes what you have certainly could.

  3. What if there is no oxy in the country i live in? (Not american). I have white rugs, i just love white, its doesnt get too dirty i vacuum a lot and take care of it.

    1. try washing soda with hydrogen peroxide – check out this article:

  4. My only question is that I saw the exact same “recipe” ( except they added 1 tsp of Downey fabric softener) After adding it to a gallon of hot water, they used 1/4 cup of that solution to their shampooer with water already in the shampooer!

    1. So your question is ….

  5. Very nice video. Highly appreciated. Always loved a good cleaning carpet.

    1. Me too!

  6. What if I want to fill a 3 gallon bucket. Do I triple the recipe?

    1. Yes, triple it.

  7. Hey! This really works thank you for the video

    1. Whitney – Thanks for leaving a comment . Glad this carpet cleaner worked for you. Share this video with your friends – they’ll love you for it.

  8. Wow…this is exactly what I do!.It cleans perfectly, and I even just use the cheap Dollar Tree detergent! I also add about 2 cups of white vinegar. The vinegar smell’s not too bad, and The smell disappears when the carpet’s dry. My carpet is old and must be rotting…it starts to smell after a few months. The vinegar knocks out any odors.

    1. Great tip Stacey!

  9. Thank you sooooooooo much, it worked!

    1. Hooray, love to hear this!

  10. *_I’m tired of spending $16 a month Bissell Carpet Shampoo….have two house dogs and shampoo my carpets every week. Will try your solution to see if it works as good or better. Thanks, sub’d._*

    1. Wow – cleaning your carpet every week! That’s a major committment. Please let us know how you like the solution.

  11. Thanks for this. Do you do rinse the solution out of the carpet or just absorb the solution?

    1. We just suck it out with our carpet cleaner. However, we borrowed a friends carpet cleaner and they had a water rinse cycle. Here’s a link to it on Amazon: It has 2 reservoirs, one for cleaning solution and one for clean water to rinse with.

  12. Thanks. However since you didn’t do a comparison test, we can’t be sure how yours compares with expensive brands.

    1. Good question. We have used the store bought brands and see no difference … expect the cost. Our solution costs about 25 cents per gallon.

  13. can you use purex essentials or gain/oxy wash or borax/mean green degreaser?

    1. We recommend being very careful with detergents that have whitners in them as they may bleach out a carpet. Other detergents should be okay. Test before committing to doing a whole room.

  14. Gona try it this weekend. Thanks.

    1. Let us konw how it works for you.

  15. Sir, I can’t find last 2 products. so will u pls let me know wt can I use instead ? Thanks.

    1. MoneySmartFamily.okey. Thank u so much for replying 🙏 . I will follow your recipe.

    2. @Sonu Patel Give it a try – See the recipe here for the amount to use. Use this at your own risk. It should be okay, as we have used it on 2 different Hoover machines, but we’re not responsible for any damage. Do your research and if the manufacturer is explicit about only using their solution – I would do it their way.

    3. MoneySmartFamily I have Lysol all purpose cleaner. Would that work? And how much ? I am asking bcoz I just bought new carpet vacuum cleaner and I don’t want to ruin it.thank u.

    4. Use a general purpose liquid cleaner – that doesnt have bleach in it and OxyClean.

  16. I used this on carpets and it worked as expected. I had put a gallon in a garden sprayer to pretreat all the stains. My mother who recently passed was a heavy smoker. I decided to try it out on the ceiling in her old bedroom. 5 years of 2 packs a day had a lot of nicotine stain. I sprayed it on and within seconds it was breaking up. I wiped it down and it left nothing but clean white ceiling and the smell is so much better. It only took about 10 minutes to clean it all. I’ll probably go over it a few more times just to make sure I got as much as I can.

    1. Chris – sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. That’s amazing that it worked so well on the ceiling – way to be creative! Thanks for sharing.

  17. Wouldn’t recommend this for your shampooer. As the solution dries inside the shampooer it leaves a crystalline residue which clogs hoses and stuff inside. A real bitch to clean because you have to take the whole thing apart. If you do use it I would suggest a rinsing of your machine w/ just plain water when you’re finished and don’t be surprised if you go to use it sometime and no liquid goes through the shampooer. They’re pretty delicate machines and you’re probably just best off using as directed.

    1. We have used it several times in our shampooer and haven’t had any problems. But it’s always good to be cautious.

  18. Anyone try this on pet stains?

    1. We used our dawn and hydrogen peroxide carpet spotting solution on pet stains and it worked great. Get the reciepe here:

      Watch the video here;

  19. DO NOT USE TIDE …. i had a flooring and floor cleaning service for years and we found tide leaves way to much residue even after rinsing.. the residue attracts dirt

    1. @MoneySmartFamily it was hinted to me the color boosters in tide might be the problem .. but ive had very good results with arm and hammer with oxi clean ..and the odor blaster one for pet odors .. we ran two small truck mounted units and would almost always get a slight tacky feeling after extraction using tide .. on the flip side the jobs done with tide seemed to get dirty again faster so as far as profit wise tide was better i guess but we got paid to clean
not set them up for another call back

    2. Allen thanks for the warning – we like the smell of Tide, but we figure just about any washing machine detergent would work. What would you recommend instead of Tide.

  20. Forget smelling good. Does it clean the floor or not

    1. Did you watch the video? The carpet definitely was cleaner …. and the water reservoir was filthy.

  21. Just made it. Perfect. I used almost-boiled water to make it dissolve quick. Could probably make 50 gallons of the stuff for about 20.00.

    1. Great idea on boiling to get it to dissolve quicker. Thanks for sharing.

  22. This stuff is like A MAGIC!!!! 👏 👏 👏
I had a pretty big oil stain on beige carpet, w/ur pretreatment and this solution here, it’s gone; looks like there was never anything there. THANK YOU 😊

    1. @MoneySmartFamily oh no it wasn’t my pet, I literally had peanut oil in my carpet 😱. Using the indoor turkey fryer 🦃 my countertop are too high so I put a table in the dining room, all was well until I needed to use the spout to empty the oil, I left it for a second, came back and screamed 😱 oil running out the spout onto the carpet.

But, with the solution, everything looks like new 😁👌🏾👍🏾

    2. Woo Hoo! Way to go. Hope you pet doesn’t have to “go again.” But if it does happen, you’ll be prepared.

  23. I have to wonder if laundry detergent and oxy clean alone wouldn’t work well…

    1. @MoneySmartFamily Aha, thanks for the tips

    2. @MoneySmartFamily how is it cheaper if u have another ingredient?
the OP asks if u can leave out the awesome ?

    3. @yousaiditzero We use a knock off oxi clean type product from the dollar stores, way cheaper!

    4. @MoneySmartFamily I am confused…isn’t the laundry detergent and oxy clean two of your three ingredients?

    5. It might, but our homemade solution is cheaper, and we feel like it works better.

  24. Is this okay to use for the Bissell Big Green?

    1. Don’t know – we’ve only used it on Hoover models.

  25. Just picked up all this except for tide, dollar tree was out and used the generic detergent instead. Didn’t do as good as the Bissell solution I normally use but it’s a really good and very cheap alternative 👍

    1. kyle – way to be resourceful!

  26. I just use Gain laundry soap on my carpet with hot water

    1. Becky – sounds good – how did it work?

  27. Thank you for sharing. Will try it

    1. You will love it!

  28. Greetings.I bought a bissell power force.Real good cleaner. The solution in a small bottle that comes with it was ok but not great.I tried your remedy and I got to tell you, It’s great. Thanx for the upload!!!!!

    1. Glad it worked for you! Thanks for sharing.

  29. Can you clean upholstery couch will it leave residue any reason to rinse.

    1. This certainly could work. Try a spot in an unseen place first!

  30. Great hack thanks. Do you have a money saving hack for a protectant scotch guard solution after shampooing? Thanks.

    1. We’ve never done that, so no we don’t. So sorry.

  31. Just bought a house with heavy soiled carpet in the Master suite, I will be doing this tomorrow… I’ll take before and after pics and update my comment. 😊😊 thank you for this sincerely, A Penny saving mama 😉

    1. Terrific Christina!

  32. Excuse me good sir but I have to say your carpet looks amazingly clean!

    1. Thank you!

  33. Can this be used for upholstery??

    1. @MoneySmartFamily it would have been nice if you would have just provided the link in your response. You have so many videos to look through I couldn’t find it.

    2. Yes it can, see our upholstery video.

  34. Wow thank you i was just about to buy some carpet cleaner and i;m so glad i hit youtube first thank you man !

    1. Thanks for watching. You’re going to love it!

  35. Does the Oxyclean , LA solution, or other… have to be chlorine? If it has chlorine, will it fade/bleach it?

    1. Oxyclean does not contain bleach. It does contain hydrogen peroxide which is safe on most carpets and fabrics.

  36. I have the Hoover power scrub deluxe which has two compartments one for the solution and one for plain water.
I use ALL with oxi laundry detergent to mix my solution and add 1/3 cup Pet Stain remover that contains enzymes.
In the clear water side I add 5-8 oz Odoban.
I use the cucumber melon or the linen scent and they both work great!

It’s a pain to have to go over the same area to rinse but once I finally started to rinse my carpet after shampooing it really did make a difference and helps keep new dirt from sticking as much.
The Hoover I have has a knob to easily switch back and forth from washing and rinsing so I wash and rinse the same section as I clean. It’s still a pain (IMO) but saves me the hassle of having to come back once I’m done shampooing and having to go over the whole area again to rinse.

    1. Thanks for sharing how you use your hoover power scrub. We know its extra work to rinse the carpet, but the results are so much better. We love having clean carpets. And the Hoover cleaner makes it easy.

  37. One gallon hot h20
2 tablespoon non bleach laundry detergent
    one.quarter cup store bleach cleaner(isopropyl)?
One scoop small laundry soap solids

    1. Great idea. That’s awesome that it gets rid of the smoke smell. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Quick reference! I use this in my old smoking car
      Done with the stink

  38. Watched your video went to dollar tree 15 minutes after, to get everything lol.. thanks!!

    1. You’re going to love it.

  39. this worked brilliantly, thanks

    1. Glad you liked it. We use it all the time now.

  40. Will this take out the pet urine?

    1. I try to clean the pet stain asap with Pet Stain Remover from Dollar Tree and I always add it to the cleaning solution I make with ALL with oxi laundry detergent.
My shampooer has a solution side and a clean water side.
I add 5-8oz of Odoban to the clean water side for rinsing.
This method has worked great every time to remove pet stain and odors.

    2. It can help to take out the stain, but won’t be able to get rid of the odor. Carpet experts recommend and enzyme killing solution to get rid of the smell.

  41. Hi I have a pure wool+cotton rig

Would your ingredients work! Thanks. Cathy

    1. NOOOO! You cannot use OxyClean on wool. This guy has no clue.

    2. It should, but test first on a small area.

  42. I couldn’t find the LA products, so I used Oxy Clean, Gain, and another general purpose cleaner/degreaser. It worked GREAT! I have light colored carpets. So I was a little skeptical, but I must say, this was terrific! Thanks!

    1. @Golden Blondie which product are you going to use since i live in the UK aswell

    2. Waitingfor AMiracle I’m from the uk so I will give it a bash

    4. So glad it worked for you. Thanks for sharing what you used.

  43. Hilarious! Don’t quit your day job. You’re no chemist!

Oxiclean releases hydrogen peroxide in water. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes to oxygen and water shortly thereafter. Hydrogen peroxide decomposes in the presence of light. You used clear spray and storage bottles.

You have no bleaching capability left.

    1. The video I just watched he put it in the tank right away.
Spray bottle I guess you’d have to make up fresh every time.

    2. MoneySmartFamily

Make up your cleaner without Oxiclean. Add Oxiclean to the tank as you fill it. Then the peroxide will be fresh and potent.

    3. Frank thanks for your input. Yes dark bottles would be better, however, this has worked great for us!

  44. Where do I buy the gallon of warm water

    1. Definitely a hard to find product 😂😂

    2. Hahhaa what an idiot 😬😂😂

    3. @MoneySmartFamily what’s nice is that you can return it if it gets cold…. you don’t even need a receipt

    4. 😁

    5. I think I saw some in a SkyMall catalog, it was special volcanically heated water from Fiji, and was only $89.99. Sent to you FedEx Overnight in a special thermal insulated package so it stayed nice and warm. Comes with a free super copper bracelet that cures cancer.

  45. I use a very similar homemade solution. Only difference is that i add roughly a cup of folex carpet spot remover as well. Works better than any of the expensive cleaners i have used in the past.

    1. Folex is amazing!! It’s gotten years-old stains (including coffee) out of our carpet with no color change, I love it 😍

    2. Never heard of Folex – sounds like a great idea.

  46. Don’t you have to use plain water to rinse the chemicals out of the carpet after you finish shampooing the carpet?

    1. I never used to and thought it was just fine but I recently just started to rinse and it does make a difference in how well it keeps the carpet from becoming dark with foot traffic again.
Now that I rinse after shampooing I can go much longer before I need to shampoo the carpet again.
I use the Hoover deluxe which has a solution side and a clean water side which makes it much easier to rinse as I go from section to section without having to come back later to rinse.

  47. Is it true that laundry or dish detergents leave a residue on the carpet, making dirt stick to it more?

    1. @MoneySmartFamily the Hoover power scrub machine can only be used to scrub carpet?…or can it be used like a regular carpet machine like the one you using in this video?

    2. @MoneySmartFamily oh nice that’s good to know thanks a lot 👍

    3. That’s not been our experience – we’ve cleaned the carpet in several rooms using this solution and they look great. If you are concerned, just be sure that you use a machine that does a good job rinsing. We just borrowed one that does that very thing. It’s a top rated Hoover Power Scrub carpet cleaner and is on sale at Amazon for $122.

  48. We tried your carpet cleaning receipe in our Hoover Shampooer. Our Dollar Tree did not have the liquid Awesome orange so we bought the powder – hope that is ok – used the same amount as the liquid. Do your carpets feel soapy at all?

    1. @MoneySmartFamily Thanks very much. Appreciate your response.

    2. No, ours didn’t feel soapy. You may need to run your carpet cleaner with just water to clean the carpet a second time.

  49. Awesome!

  50. Is there any substitute for the La total awesome cleaning solution? I live in Australia and they don’t sell it.

    1. Try another all purpose cleaner – be sure it doesn’t have bleach in it.

  51. The branded carpet cleaning liquids are so expensive. Thanks for sharing the video…we are going to try it out today.

    1. Our eldest daughter was over at our house yesterday and had just cleaned her carpet using this solution. Her husband came home and was amazed at how nice the carpet looked. You’re going to love it.

  52. Love the video and just mixed up some solution with said dollar store products to try as well. I’ll be using this stuff with a Bissell big green machine, which is a single pre-mix solution tank style unit. My question is….when you use this solution, do you go over your previously cleaned areas with a rinse pass of some sort? Thanks again.

    1. MoneySmartFamily

You apparently don’t understand that the way you recommend using it depletes its bleaching capability, wasting it.

    2. We haven’t, but you could.

    3. Rick Pazmino

      Avoid the Oxiclean

    4. We didn’t use a rinse, just let the carpet cleaner suck up as much as possible.

  53. thanks I had the same experience ais digillie mama worked well thanks.

  54. Just used this! It really works, thank you so much for sharing this! You saved me lots of money!

    1. Ashley ill shamppoo your carpet anytime 😉

    2. Glad it worked so well. We love saving you money.

  55. Great one!! Found this video straight off Google search. Now, as I am from the UK, I will just have to find the equivalent UK cleaning brands from my local Pound Shop! 😁

    1. @MoneySmartFamily Certainly! ☺️

    2. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment – once you find similar products, could you share them here? We have quite a few viewers from the UK and I’m sure they’d all appreciate your input!

  56. I’d add some bleach to that
It does wonders even on colored carpet

    1. @Violater 702 so how’d it work out for ya?

    2. MoneySmartFamily I do it just 1 cap full
      The cap of the bottle
I am gonna try this solution tho buying cleaner for $20 and sometimes 2 bottles is a waste of money

    3. David, That’s not something we’d recommend, but if you do try it, please let us know what the dilution ratio that you use for the bleach AND how it turns out a couple of weeks after you test it. We’d love to know.

  57. Will try this….thanks

  58. Im totally gonna do this thank youuuu!

    1. Also want to add that i made a DIY pretreatment. Of 1 part water 1 part white vinegar and 2 tbsp of laundry detergent that i let sit for 30 minutes after vacuuming

    2. @MoneySmartFamily update: this is an excellent method! Cleaner in the store was 20-28 dollars for a 32 fl oz bottle… And i find that it never smells as amazing as it claims. This solution has a much stronger smell of “freshness” and got up all of my foot traffic, wine, and puppy accidents. I rent my home and there was no TELLING the last time it’d been shampooed. My carpet was definitely not pretty. Now it’s prisitine for $2! (I already had the tide)

    3. Hannah you’re going to love how good it smells and how well it cleans!

  59. I used to clean carpets commercially and one of our sales pitches was we did not use any detergent which leaves a residue which will clean your shoe soles or feet. We used a softening agent which was very effective then finished off with a spot guard spray. Your formula uses a very small amount of detergent, however.

    1. Yes! Hot water alone, especially if the stain is fresh and not set. I’ve done this many times using my little green machine following my young child around. Lol

    2. You’re correct about it using a very small amount of detergent. We do recommend thorough rinsing and blotting. We also recommend using plain water first and only using this solution if the stain won’t come out with water. Thanks for sharing your experience.

  60. My Bissell has a small “solution tank” separate from the clean/dirty tank. Do I put this cleaning solution in the solution tank or the main water tank?

    1. Actually, Bissel says to only use theirs, of course.

    2. John Gronber

    3. Probably in the solution tank. But read the directions. Put it wherever you would put store-bought cleaning solutions.

  61. Cleaning hardwood floors

    1. It wouldn’t be our first choice for cleaning hardwood floors.

  62. How much water did you use?

    1. 1 gallon. Thanks for asking.

  63. I am literally out of Rug Doctor, and will use this solution when I clean my carpets this week. Thank you so much.

    1. If you like it – be sure to read our blog – we break down the cost of store-bought cleaners and this solution – you’ll be amazed at how little this costs. We also just created a .pdf label that you can print out and put on a one-gallon bottle so you’ll always have the mixture right where you can find it.

  64. Very helpful!Thanks!

    1. Thank you mama G

  65. Do you put this straight into the vacuum or do you dilute the solution with water inside the vacuum water bucket?

    1. You all made my day, too funny. It’s just a formula, nothing earth shaking.

    2. Kerri

He doesn’t understand what Oxiclean is or that the hydrogen peroxide it contains decomposes in water when exposed to light. Hence, his cleaner has no bleaching capability left.

    3. @rjpool21 – The man told us very straightforwardly, every single measurement needed to get started. If, after the extremely clear instructions, you still have questions about what the measurements are, I would advise you to hire a professional, as you aren’t cut out for this. I’m serious, if this nice man were to answer your question right now, he’d be repeating himself, therefore, wasting his time and your time. It’s you, and those like you, who would constantly hold the class back. When a professor/teacher/instructor/boss, has to continually repeat their self to those who do not have proper reading/listening skills, it’s to the detriment of the rest of the class, who may be ready to move on to the next level or subject. Now, just imagine you and your kind engaged in this sort of behavior, but on a grand scale. Well, it’s not too difficult to imagine, as, unfortunately, we see it in our society and education system today. That’s the problem with putting everyone in the same class, due only to their age, as if we’re ‘one size fits all.’ People/students/employees, etc., should be placed/hired, according to their ability, to insure more efficiently ran institutions. The inclined, and the not so inclined, would be so much more happy. A heavy weight on the education system, is a heavy weight on society.

    4. @Kerri Oh my, you are quite the Biatch. I too had the same question as EveDoll154. He does not tell you how much water is in the machine before he adds his magic potion. And you can’t really tell by watching. He should have said something like add one cup of this to a gallon of water. etc. Kerri, you may want to change your “less than sunny” disposition or you will end up living alone with a clowder of cats. Maybe you already do?

    5. @EveDoll154 -You don’t, obviously.

  66. Would have been nice to see before and after cleaning to see how effective your homemade solution is. I would not try this without some proof.

    1. MoneySmartFamily I’m doing mine!!

    2. Sorry about that. We did show Steve cleaning the carpet – try it on a small area – it really does work great. In the article on our site, we did a cost analysis of several different carpet cleaners – you’ll be amazed at how inexpensive a gallon of this solution is compared to store-bought versions.

Plus we made up some printable .pdf labels with the recipe on it. This way you can put it on the bottle and always have the recipe available.

  67. Tide but dollar store awesome.

    1. Tide simply clean and simple/ simple pure and clean etc six load bottle

  68. Outstanding explanation, and easy to follow directions! Nicely done,

    1. Thank you Halsey!

  69. Here’s a video request because I see you guys with dr. Phil and I wonder why haven’t heard about the episode… not from his YouTube channels, Facebook, Twitter ect. And I know that you guys talk about money.

    1. Wifeswap asked us like 4 times and we said no. family Feud would be hilarious!

    2. No, it’s not Youtube rules, it’s Dr. Phil rules.
