Personal hygiene, self-care and depression

Loading ....

Often when we feel depressed, we are less likely to take care of ourselves and our environment. In this video I talk about my experience of hygiene (or lack thereof) and depression, and the effect this has on my well-being. Please feel free to share your story with me, if you feel comfortable.

Don’t forget to tell me how your week has been.

Thank you for taking the time to watch this – I hope to see you next time.

Please subscribe to my channel for more videos about mental illness and leave any questions or comments you may have in the space below.

Take care and I hope you have a safe, peaceful week.

The Little Blue Pot
Welcome to my YouTube channel where I’m hoping to educate people on the different types of mental disorders to provide an understanding and learn ways to cope. I also vlog about my own experience of living with mental illness, as well as sharing other aspects of my life. I want to raise awareness of mental illness and how to have better mental health, so I hope my channel helps you and others.

I am not a qualified mental health professional or expert, but I am an expert in living with mental illness. All my videos are based on lots of research and I do my best to explain everything as clearly as possible and provide examples from my life to help you understand. I might not get it right every time, but I do the best I can. I hope the findings from my research are of benefit to you.

This Vlog is from my perspective, but I do appreciate that not everyone will have had the same experience as myself – we are all different after all, even if we have the same diagnosis. I have also tried, where applicable, to reference everything correctly, but we are all human and make mistakes – please stick with me.

  1. This is me and thank you for helping me

  2. I had such bad depression growing up I didn’t shower everyday. I wouldn’t brush my teeth properly and now my teeth have suffered. I hate depression but I’m recovering now

  3. I have been so depressed didnt brush my hair for two weeks. LOL I looked like a matted street dog. I hate this depression. Cant take it anymore and nobody really understand how I feel inside.

  4. This was a very comforting video to watch, I just wanted to thank you for your advice and let you know that it’s helped me a lot.

  5. I love this video, it makes me feel less alone. Hope your doing well

  6. I love your hair

  7. I struggle around 10 years of depression and suicidal thoughts! I neglected my mental physical and emotional needs! It’s sooo bad ! My skin hair teeth and my self esteem is so fucked up ! I ended up so sad dirty and unattractive more and more! I made the decision this day to take care of me every single day! It’s hard but I will do my best! Also I know it will take years to be in a steady clean healthy place! But I owe it to myself after years of struggle

    1. If u have depression, good idea to have lots of clothes..if u don’t feel like washing them, u have so many, you can rotate them and wear different outfit every day..next tip, have short hair so if u don’t feel like brushing it not end of world..next, have electric toothbrush..less effort to brush teeth..next, have a few nice accessories..wear a beautiful scarf to hide messy hair, next make sure u have a shower installed..if u don’t feel like having a proper bath, have a quick shower, next, get sunshine, sit on the park, have a walk in the park, burn essential oils, incense and candles, meet a friend watch a documentary..keep busy so ur mind is focussed externally, not internally, have rails to hang ur clothes if u can’t be bothered to fold them, have frozen ingredients in freezer so I can make a meal in 10 minutes, do some hobbies..

    2. Sm Mn I can relate to this comment so much. I’m so happy that you recognize unhealthy habits and wanting to be a better person. I’m currently dealing with anxiety, low self esteem, and negative thoughts. But I’m really hopeful that the both of us can come to a place to take care of our selves mentally and physically. You deserve to be here no matter what your thoughts tell you. I’m rooting for you!!!

  8. 🌷❤️

  9. I don’t think this is just a depression thing. I’m from Indianapolis, IN (a very diverse city) and there’s this lovely hospital here called eskenazi. (The best place in my opinion.) And the people I work with there for my treatment needs say there’s a lot of people who struggle with hygiene in mental illness. I’m not sure why and I don’t have the answers, but I’ve struggled with this my whole life and it’s something I’ve been working on with the help of apps like Streaks and that kind of stuff. I love this topic by the way. I wish more people would talk about it. Thanks for the video.

  10. Thank you for posting this. It’s helpful to hear from someone who really seems to understand. Seriously, this was some of the best advice I’ve personally heard in regard to depression. So powerful to feel understood and not alone in the mess of depression. Thank you, again 💜

  11. Just make it2 the next sunrise

  12. Very pretty woman

  13. How do you know if you are depressed or you’re just lazy…..? I’ve actually researched “don’t take care of your own personal hygiene ” in here, YouTube, to see if someone else shares this problem….. but, I keep seeing it associated with depression. Can you be depressed and still find joy in somethings? Still manage to be successful at work? Still functioning in a everyday basis? I don’t mean thrive and move forward, but do the bare minimum to survive and feel not sad but not happy, ever, just anxious all the time…..?

  14. I found your channel after your PIP video. I have BPD and Autism and am still on DLA so that has helped me. My personal hygiene is poor due to my depression most days all of my executive functioning skills are quite poor showering is torture at most I shower twice a week. Teeth are neglected  as is shaving ( I am a guy ) the CMHT are getting in touch with Social Services because ” I smell”  how very professional …. well lets see if they can help.

    1. Hey, that’s so awesome, you should totally be proud of yourself. Exactly, one day at a time. One task at a time and build from there. Good luck tomorrow. Hugs x

    2. Bless you. I have to get caught up on watching your videos as and when time allows. I am seeing Social Services tomorrow  and self care has been good today – shaved and showered etc so I am proud of myself. I am sure you think in terms of ”one day at a time” x

    3. Hi Pomgee, welcome to The Little Blue Pot. Thanks for being so open and honest in the comments, I’m just sorry you are going through this too. I smell sometimes too, especially when I don’t wash for a few days, so don’t beat yourself up. You are not the only one. I hope they help you my friend and make you feel better about yourself, sometimes they are so unprofessional in how they do things. Take care my friend. Hugs x

  15. Hi gem i know this does not apply to this video but I’ve been fora f2f and received my dessision today I have standard care and mobility I did have high rate mobility for 10yrs on dla, I have degenerative erosion of my spine arthritis in my hands worse on left, hips, fibromalgia, and spongolosis in my neck and shoulders, this lot been in pain 24/7causes depression too oh I also have copd and c-ptsd so you can see life is not great don’t sleep same as you say don’t wash my hair and don’t get dressed but I brush my teeth lolx and I can’t do much at all but once or twice a week go in car to my friends, thats when I don’t stay in bed all day and don’t eat anyway the dwp reckon I can manage without a car I hardly go out anyway the assessor lied about everything in my test apparently because I can take 75p from a pound I’m OK I don’t show signs of pain xx

  16. That was so gooood!! Lots of kind and practical advice and insight. It was actually so moving I’m going to keep the video on standby. You not only covered the issue itself but the VERY harsh words we say to ourselves, myself included..the shame and the attitude that we need to “fight” depression..its SO much pressure, and it’s pointless because feeling less than when facing down mental illness makes all your symptoms worse..this year I finally am trying to just accept when I feel that oppressive feeling to just relax, as much as I can..and like you said say hey depression..I know your here, Lol. I once described my depression like dark wraiths, these big powerful fiery things. But acknowledging them now makes them less scary..less powerful. Beautifully explained, actually gave me happy tears..thank you so much for doing this..I know it will help many people💖 Big huge, enormous Hugs again from the States!!
Ps. Nice southern accent!! I wasnt expecting and cracked up and spit out my water, Lol😂😂

    1. I think a depressive episode leads to exhaustion and drop in energy, but also self negelct is a form of self punishment..u are not I’ll…you have been made sick by others..best to avoid harmful people..

    2. Hi Elisa, so pleased you liked the video, especially given that it was your suggestion – I’m pleased I did it justice. You are so right, when that oppressive feeling starts to take hold, just ride it out and don’t fight it. Thank you so much for requesting the video, please share any other ideas you have please 😁 take care lovely and have a good week. I’m pleased you liked the southern accent, I have no idea where that came from 😂.
      Hugs xx

  17. I struggle so much with BPD and depression and my house has suffered. I’ve struggled with keeping on top of chores, washing, tidying the whole lot including taking care of myself. Really related to this video thank you for sharing. You expressed the many facets of the struggle really well. Thank you

    1. Hi Sheena, sorry you have BPD and depression, bloody sucks doesn’t it! It can be so hard to do chores around the house when we feel so low (mentally and physically), so just do what you can. I’m so pleased the video helped, you are not alone my friend. Sending the biggest of hugs. Take care and have a good week xx

  18. I struggle with personal hygiene issues. But I definitely do notice a bump in my self-esteem when I bath and dress nice and fresh. I was going to do that today, but I was not feeling it =/ so I didn’t. Tomorrow I will though, mmmmmm.

    1. Don’t be around abusive ppl or abusive situations or abusive environments..don’t allow any individual or group to control you, your decision making skills etc..don’t allow anyone to siphon off your energy..narcissists use you..you are left feeling mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted..you feel like shit, look like shit because you have been treated like shit..just say no and put the phone down..you belong entirely to yourself and are not anybodies slave, servant to be utilised..your time belongs to you. Your powers and drive and energy belong to you. Do not allow anyone to deplete your energy.

    2. Hi Suki, hope you’re ok. Thanks for your comment. If you manage to do stuff tomorrow then that is fine. It’s ok to not do stuff sometimes. You are doing well my friend. We are in this together. Take care. Hugs xx

  19. hi gem i did a video on motivation i khow everything is a major effect when your in the grips of anxiety its like walking through treacle x its so easy too slip from being up i think of our condition is like a game of snakes and ladders x

    1. Hi Anthony, sorry dude, I’m a bit behind on your videos. Hope you’re doing ok. It is so like walking through treacle sometimes, and I like the snakes and ladders analogy. Take care my friend. Hope you have a good week. Will check out your vid. Hugs x

  20. hope your ok gem my hugs go out too you xx

    1. Hope you’re ok Anthony. Sending hugs back xxx

  21. Really interesting and informative video
