5 Simple DIY Household Cleaners | All Natural & Effective

Hey everyone! In this video you’ll get to see 5 DIY household cleaners that I use to clean my house on a daily and weekly basis. I have high expectations for a clean house, so even though I like natural cleaners, I need cleaners that will work so I don’t have
to spend time scrubbing and cleaning. Not only do these cleaners do an AMAZING job at cleaning but they are
are also non-toxic and SIMPLE to make! I also don’t have a lot of time on my hands as I’m a full time working mom so
even though I like the idea of DIY cleaners, they have to be simple. They are also pretty cheap to make
and are cheaper than store bought cleaners. These cleaners all fit the bill! I hope you enjoy!

I got a lot of my inspiration from the Clean My Space YouTube Channel. Check this channel out!

Tips for Greener Household Cleaning

On today’s episode of Live Young Lifestyle, we learn the detrimental effects of common household cleaning products on our health and the environment, the three types of cleaning products we should avoid, and some safer, do-it-yourself household cleaners.

Do-it-yourself cleaning recipes:
All purpose cleaner: Mix 50% water and 50% distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle. Use on countertops, basins, windows and floors.
Bathroom tile and sink cleaner: Mix 1/2 cup baking soda with a little liquid dish soap to make a paste.
Greasy surfaces: Mix vinegar and salt and scrub.
Oven cleaner: Sprinkle baking soda on oven stains. Moisten with water and let sit overnight. Wipe clean with damp sponge.
Laundry: Add 1/2 cup of distilled vinegar to the rinse cycle to remove strong odors, brighten colors, and reduce static cling.

How to eliminate dry powder problems in carpet – deodorizers, cleaners, copier toner from carpet.

Sometimes, after hot water extraction cleaning a carpet, a white powder on the surface of the carpet will show up the next day after the carpet has dried! And then, you get a very angry call from your customer!

The most common cause of white powder residue is the use of powdered sprinkle-on carpet deodorizers, such as Love My Carpet® deodorizer, Arm and Hammer® and Carpet Fresh® or even powdered absorbent cleaners like Capture® and Host®.

The powdered deodorizers as well as baking soda are quite commonly used to get rid of spills, urine, bad odors, etc. in carpet and rugs and are often way overused. In fact, it’s a good idea to ask whether the customer has a pet. If they do, they are probably using such products to take care of pet urine odors and stains. These powders accumulate in the base of the carpet, sometimes to the point where they are visible and to the point where the carpet even becomes stiff.

After warm water extraction (steam cleaning), as the carpet dries, the remaining powder wicks to the surface where the white powder is now visible.

Follow these steps to remove this white powder residue on the carpet:
• This white powder is usually easily removed simply by pile lifting or by thorough vacuuming.
• Pile Lifting Carpet – If you know or suspect in advance that these powders have been used, we strongly suggest using a pile lifter on the carpet to pull all of this junk out. (0:16)
• It would also be wise to forewarn the customer that white powder might still appear in the morning and it would be wise for you to check on it.
• Remember – A problem explained up front is called “education”; a problem explained after the fact is called “an excuse”! (2:56)
• Other possible causes of this problem are: concrete dust (efflorescence), construction dust, detergent residue, ice melt (especially calcium carbonate) and breakdown of the carpet backing latex.
• If the carpet is a direct glue-down on concrete slab, the concrete efflorescence is a definite possibility. For that and for ice melt, do a Brown Out® flush (sometimes call “acid rinse”) at about 4-6 ounces per gallon of water.

How to Remove COPIER TONER from Carpet: (3:09)
• It is EXTREMELY important that you NOT get photocopy toner wet initially!
• Vacuum very thoroughly, working from the outside toward the center to keep from spreading the material (no brush initially).
• Then vacuum with the brush or use a pile lifter.
• Apply Power Gel, agitate, very thoroughly extract and dry blot to avoid wicking.
• Lightly brush or groom to align fibers.
• If discoloration remains, apply diluted Pro-Solve Gel.
• Thoroughly extraction clean the area.
• If a heavy spill, use Stain Blotter to prevent wicking.
• Of course, if the customer has tried to remove it before you arrived or a herd of two-legged elephants has walked on the carpet and ground in the material, you are unlikely to remove it all.•

How to Remove Fingerprint Dust from Carpet: (4:06)
There are literally hundreds of varieties of fingerprint dust of various colors and properties!
• Follow the same procedure as for photocopier toner above.

BLOG (with a detailed explanation of all tips mentioned):

We love hearing your stories, seeing your messy/clean pics and answering your questions!

I think we mention baking soda in about 50% of our videos. The stuff is incredible. It’s cheap, available in every grocery and drug store and has so many uses. It’s fascinating stuff! It’s great for three key functions from a cleaning standpoint: abrasion, deodorizing and whitening.

I could probably do a video on 10 uses for baking soda every week for the next 20 years and never once repeat myself…now do you understand how amazing this stuff really is?!

I also love it because it is safe enough to eat, in fact, it is found in many baking recipes. Therefore, I’m convinced that it is a household cleaning kit staple.

So in no particular order, here you go:

10 – remove scuff marks and crayon marks from a painted wall.

9 – battle the worst body odour with baking soda.

8 – clean and unclog a smelly sink drain.

7 – clean your tile grout. Our in-depth video on grout cleaning

6 – add abrasion to any cleaning product (especially a homemade one) – this puts other products like VIM and Comet to shame. Here’s our video on making your own cleaning products

5 – deodorize your kitty litter box.

4 – clean your non-self cleaning oven. You don’t need anything caustic!

3 – remove hair product build-up from your hair (hair clarifying treatment). Mind=blown.

2 – deodorize your carpets

1 – add to laundry to create an amazing laundry booster!

Have I convinced you to purchase an industrial drum of the stuff yet?

What are your favourite baking soda tips? Let me know if you try any of these and what your results were.

Do you have any ideas for a top 10 list? Let me know!

Thanks for watching 😀
