Borax, is it safe? After hours and hours of research I’ve decided that it’s safe for my home and family when used as a carpet and rug deodorizer. I use the borax from Mountain Rose Herbs (link below).
If you’d like more information on deciding whether or not borax is safe for you, I recommend checking out the articles below, they may help to explain a lot of the confusion that’s out there about borax and boric acid.
If you’re not comfortable using borax that’s okay too! Simply replace the borax in the recipe with more baking soda and you’re good to go.
Essential oils, are they the same as fragrance oils? Short answer: nope.
It may be tempting to use fragrance oils instead of essential oils because they’re cheaper but many fragrance oils contain synthetic chemicals that you may not want to be inhaling. I know essential oils are expensive and if you find any for really cheap you should be cautious and question why they’re so cheap. If you can’t afford essential oils, it’s totally okay, just skip adding them to the deodorizer, it’ll still work great!
– 1c. baking soda
– 1/2c. borax (sodium borate/tetraborate NOT boric acid):
– 1/4c. cornmeal
– 10-15 drops of grapefruit essential oil:
– 10-15 drops of lavender essential oil:
– mixing bowl
– mason jar
– cheesecloth (or 1 sheet of paper and a hole punch)
