Multivitamin/mineral Supplements

“Americans have been taking multivitamin/mineral (MVM) supplements since the early 1940s, when the first such products became available. MVMs are still popular dietary supplements and, according to estimates, more than one-third of all Americans take these supplements.”

The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements

“Nutrition experts contend that all we need is what’s typically found in a routine diet. Industry representatives, backed by a fascinating history, argue that foods don’t contain enough, and we need supplements. Fortunately, many excellent studies have now resolved the issue.”

Getting your vitamins and minerals through diet

“We all know that vitamin supplements are no substitute for a healthy diet, but nobody’s perfect when it comes to healthful eating. It can be particularly challenging to get the nutrients you need if you’re dieting or if you avoid animal or dairy products. So, many of us take a daily multivitamin as nutritional insurance. But research suggests that multivitamins may not be all they’re cracked up to be. ”

10 Common Household Items That Are Highly Flammable

Check out 10 household items that are highly flammable.

There are many household items that are highly flammable and can pose as fire hazards. Here are 10 of them.

Number 10 — Keep oranges away from flames. Specifically, the peels are the potential problem starters as the citrus oil serves as the fuel for fires.

Number 9 – Some cryogenic wart removers that contain liquid dimethyl ether and propane, have a history when it comes to fires. Since 2009, the FDA has received received 14 reports pertaining to the remedies catching fire in homes. In 11 of those cases, no ignition source was found.

Number 8 — Sure ping pong is a blast. However, a massive blaze can break out if a flame touches just one of the balls. The reason the air filled balls are so sensitive to fire is because they’re composed of a highly flammable plastic called celluloid.

Number 7 – Sunscreen. Some spray on versions contain flammable ingredients like alcohol. If the sunscreen wearer is close to an open flame, they may catch on fire. In 2012, a man in Massachusetts encountered second degree burns after cooking on the grill while wearing the spray on sunscreen.

Number 6 — Nail polish and polish removers have some fire attracting components like isopropyl alcohol and ethyl acetate. Those along with other polish chemicals act as a magnet to open flames.

Number 5 — Hand sanitizers are typically loaded with ethyl alcohol. The handy cleaning replacement for soap and water can easily catch fire if an open flame makes contact.

Number 4 — Fabric softeners. While they don’t pose a direct threat, studies showed the rinse cycle softener drastically increased the flammability of both cotton and polyester garments after they were washed.

Number 3 — Don’t ever spray air freshener with a candle lit in the background. Petroleum distillates, p-dichlorobenzene, aerosol propellants and formaldehyde contribute to the substance’s likelihood of catching fire.

Number 2 — Sugary desserts like peanut brittle. Cooking them serves as the biggest hazard. The sugar is the main problem, as if it becomes too hot, the sweet ingredient can create flames in the blink of an eye. As a preventative measure, it is suggested to never walk away from the stove when cooking.

Number 1 — Garlic is filled with natural oils, which help it cook quickly. But because it pops when placed in a hot pan, those oils can splatter onto a burner and almost immediately burst into flames.
