In this video, cleaning expert, Melissa Maker, shows how to wash produce in a quick and effective way using an eco-friendly, homemade produce wash. Produce has pesticides and other unfriendly grime, so this is how to wash produce properly and safely.

Thomas asked: Is there a cheaper way to clean my produce properly?

Answer:

What you need-
1) Fruits and vegetables
2) 2 tablespoons of baking soda
3) 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
4) 1 cup of water
5) spray bottle
6) Strainer
7) funnel (optional)

Shelf life: 2 weeks

In the spray bottle, pour the lemon juice, baking soda and water. Shake it up and set the spray bottle to mist. Put the fruits and vegetables into the strainer and douse using the spray bottle over a sink. Let the produce sit for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water. Allow the produce to air dry in the strainer and enjoy!

Did you know? Lemon juice acts as a natural disinfectant, while baking soda provides the fine grit needed to clean everything off the surface of your produce.

FYI: Thick-skinned fruit like an orange or banana don’t need to be washed since you don’t eat the skin. Thin skinned fruits and vegetables like an apple, grape or tomato should be washed before eating.

FULL GRAFTING SERIES IS HERE – . It is usually possible to find enough stuff around the average household to graft fruit trees successfully. Tape, misc knives, glue, plastic bags, and paint should suffice.

You can graft fruit trees with stuff that is just laying around most households. For cutting you can use any small sharp knife. Grafting knives are nice, but you don’t need a grafting knife. A pocket knive, utility/razor knife or small kitchen knife can work just fine. Just make sure they are sharp. For wrapping you can use various kinds of tape or strips of plastic bag. In traditional grafting, strips of fiber like raffia or lengths of string were used and then covered with clay or grafting wax. To seal the graft and the scion from drying out, use latex paint or glue such as elmers white glue or the equivalent wood glue. Tags can be made from aluminum food cans like soda cans, cat food can lids and sardine can lids with the tree names scratched in. You can learn how to graft using these simple material and tools and buy fancier stuff later if you think you need it or start grafting a lot. You can spend 17.00 on a victorinox grafting knife with one blade, but you could also buy a full swiss army knife for only a dollar or two more which will do your grafting and a make a good everyday pocket knife.
