Dietary supplements sold for weight loss, muscle building, and energy are widely used by children and young adults. A new Harvard Chan study finds that using these products may have severe health consequences.
There are as many as 80,000 vitamin and dietary supplement products available in the U.S. But the Food and Drug Administration knows little about specific products and their ingredients.
One in eight adults say they or an immediate family member have experienced a severe side effect from a vitamin or other dietary supplement. Without knowing what supplements contain, it’s difficult to spot risky or illegal products.
Requiring manufacturers to disclose their products and ingredients to the FDA would help the agency quickly find and remove harmful supplement products from the market, protecting Americans’ health.
